Part-Time Contractor: Dementia Companion & Family Support Assistant


Location: Glen Allen, VA
Schedule: Approximately 5 hours weekly
Compensation: $20–30/hour  = $400-$600 monthly depending on experience, certifications, and dementia-care familiarity. Additional hours may be offered as needed during high peak seasons.
Additional Support: Gas stipend offered

We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and emotionally intelligent Dementia Companion & Family Support Assistant to support Mr. Edwards, a 66-year-old senior residing in a skilled nursing facility in Glen Allen, VA.


This role is centered on companionship, continuity of care, emotional support, and helping maintain quality of life for an individual living with dementia and neurological-related memory challenges. We are looking for someone who values patience, humanity, consistency, professionalism, and relationship-centered care.


The ideal candidate is calm, attentive, communicative, organized, and comfortable navigating both caregiving and care coordination support responsibilities.


Weekly Responsibilities

1. Community Outing & Companion Support


(Approximately 2 hours weekly)


One weekly outing focused on connection, engagement, emotional well-being, and quality of life. Activities may include:


  • visiting family
  • attending weekly art class
  • dining at a restaurant
  • attending church or NA meetings
  • community outings and companion support

Responsibilities may include transportation assistance, wheelchair support, companionship, and helping maintain a calm, supportive, and affirming environment.


2. Nursing Home Visit & Support Tasks


(Approximately 2 hours weekly)


One weekly nursing home support visit focused on companionship, continuity of care, and practical support tasks. Responsibilities may include:

  • companionship and check-ins
  • laundry runs
  • picking up snacks or care items
  • appointment support
  • light personal care support as needed
  • observing mood, behavior, functioning, or environmental concerns


3. Care Coordination / Family Advocacy


(Approximately 1 hour weekly)


Responsibilities may include:

  • monitoring physical, emotional, and behavioral well-being and identifying concerns early
  • helping bridge communication between residents, family members, providers, and nursing home staff
  • supporting resident dignity, choices, fair treatment, and rights
  • participating in care planning meetings and supporting continuity of care
  • tracking concerns, documenting observations, and escalating unresolved issues when necessary
  • light care coordination support, including:
    • appointment scheduling and reminders
    • helping maintain a balanced social and activity calendar
    • communicating client observations, concerns, or follow-up needs with nursing home staff, psychiatric providers, specialists, or long-term care advocate(s) when appropriate
  • helping support continuity of care and quality-of-life planning across providers, caregivers, and family supports


Qualifications & Preferred Experience


  • Experience supporting older adults, individuals living with dementia, neurological conditions, or memory loss strongly preferred
  • PCA certification, CNA certification, or equivalent caregiving experience preferred
  • Comfortable navigating wheelchair equipment, transfers, and light personal care support
  • Familiarity with de-escalation, redirection, and compassionate dementia care practices preferred
  • Strong communication, professionalism, and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries
  • Reliable transportation required


Training opportunities and/or dementia care education resources may be provided through professional organizations and community partners.

Other details:


  • The contractor will report directly to Chlo'e Edwards, Daughter, Power of Attorney, and Responsible Party for Mr. Edwards
  • Final candidates may be asked to complete a background check prior to hire
  • Upon selection, the hiring supervisor will reach out to candidates directly for an informational interview + in-person interview with Mr. Edwards and family member
  • Candidates must have the ability to communicate successfully through email, or phone call (preferably text as well)
  • Candidates must have the ability to receive electronic ACH electronic payment and must fill out a W-9. Payments will not be made via check
  • Candidates must be able to fill out a weekly excel-based timesheet and fill out a visit summary through google form each visit
